Madhubani, which iterally translates into forest of honey, is an age old rural art form practiced in Bihar, India. The philosophy of Madhubani art is essentially based on the principle of dualism. Opposites run parallel to each other: life and death, day and night, joy and sorrow, body and soul etc. The paintings reflect aesthetic tastes, religious leanings, love for Nature, affection for the feminine beauty, divinity, and also the panoramic view of the day to day life of the people. However the art and artists have suffered greatly due to commercialization and cheap duplication. It is time we fetch the deserved recognition to the artists.
